CHAPTER ELEVEN

Standing between Renart and Domingo in the elevator, Troy strained his senses for the presences of other vampires as they descended to the parking garage. He felt none. So far, it seemed the garage was clear. It was risky for him to leave Renart’s penthouse, they all knew it, but when Renart asked him if he’d like to come with them on a trip up the coast, he jumped at the chance. He’d been locked up for days. Granted, the most recent two days were massively enjoyable, but he needed to get out and he hoped it would help him clear his mind on what he should do.

The elevator stopped, doors sliding open.

Domingo walked out first, pausing a few steps beyond the door, slowly scanning the area. He glanced back. “It’s clear.”

Renart laid a hand on Troy’s back, guiding him forward. “We’ll take the Rolls. It has more room.”

Troy sighed. “I hate the Rolls.”

Renart snapped his head toward him. “What? Why? It’s beautiful.”

“It’s an old man car.”

Ahead of them, Domingo snorted out a laugh.

Renart gaped at Troy. “It’s not an old man car. It’s a vehicle of elegance and sophistication.”

“It’s a boat on wheels.”

Domingo laughed louder. “Ah, these young vampires, they just don’t understand class. But he does have a point, mi hermano. It is an old man car, and since you’re nearly five hundred years old, you more than qualify for ownership.”

Renart flipped his hand toward Domingo. “I don’t know why you’re laughing. You’re older than me.”

“True. However, I’ve maintained my youthful vigor by avoiding the purchase of boats on wheels, as your young apprentice so finely described it.”

Renart pulled his car keys from his pocket. “And I maintain you both need to refine your tastes.” Nearing the silver colored Rolls Royce, he tapped the remote, disarming the alarm. He reached for the passenger side door and opened it for Troy.

Troy moved to slide in, pausing as he felt the brush of Renart’s hand on his ass. He leaned toward him, giving him a soft kiss, then climbed into the car. With Domingo settled in back, Renart walked to the driver’s side. He fired up the car, pulled forward, and left the garage.

The city slipped by, Renart driving up Lakeshore Drive going north. Troy listened to Renart and Domingo banter, to their reminiscing of misadventures they’d had, and he realized he was seeing a side of Renart that few ever did; the true side. Renart’s posturing for appearances was gone. Yes, he was still refined, that’s how he was naturally, but he was also playful, joking more than he’d ever seen him. And smiling. Every time Renart glanced at him, he was wearing a smile. He couldn’t help but smile with him.

Their relationship had gone through so many changes; master/apprentice, leader/warrior, enemies…now lovers. But this was the first time he felt they were friends.

Troy suppressed a sigh. Feeling like they’d reached this new level really wasn’t helping him clear his mind in what he should do. Should he
